Our Earth is one of many Earths in a multiverse discovered in 1054 in China when a random vortex to an Earth where dinosaurs evolved into sentient beings opened. The Emporer of the time sent five thousand soldiers, explorers, and learned men to this world. less than two thousand returned.

Naturally occurring multiversal windows (see Avlon Effect), and portals do occur (About once every 50 or so years), and range in size from a pinprick to something that can swallow an entire city). Portals and widows (see Avalon Effect), also occur near places or extreme geological stress, intense magnetic fields, and nuclear explosions.

While potentially dangerous the size of Earth dictates that most natural vortexes will not occur near humans.
